DYNASTAR SKI CROSS : THE ONE SKI In the past, Dynastar SkiCross skis used to come in a variety of configurations, from mid range to top-end, We used to be particularly enamored with SkiCross 9's, 10's and 11's... For 2008, Dynastar has cut out the lesser variants and is now offering but one flagship model: Simply called The Dynastar SkiCross.
Earlier this year, (in our Christmas Gift suggestion article) I picked the 2008 Dynastar (yes, I pronounce it DEE-NAH-STAR unlike you anglos who call it DIE-NAH-STAR) SkiCross
as my "cost is no object" pick. While I may be known for my voracious propaganda, this one was unequivocally biased, I wrote unashamedly "Like the guy said: The best skis ever. From the rank beginner to the ex-national team member these are the one ski to do it all, fast, nimble, stable, smooth, easy, challenging, great in powder, bumps, on flats, in a snowplow or trying to break 120km/h on Goat's Eye... These are the skis every skier dreams of skiing on... Crap, forget the gifting... buy them for yourself!... " I meant every single word.
The funny thing is that I all but forgot about this ski until I got a phone call earlier this season from a nice fellow named Matt. Matt was calling from North Carolina I believe, Matt was looking for the perfect ski and made the mistake of asking me what I thought... I rambled on about three or four other skis until I had an epiphany. "THE DYNASTAR SKICROSS!" Why did I forget about this icon of ski perfection? This do-it-all GS-derived 17meter wonderski? After all, it's only been our best selling family of skis for the past 5 years, it's the ski most of my buddy/customers ski on, it's the one ski everyone at every ski test unanimously loves, its the first ski to be reserved when we do our "best of the test" ski-off in Banff every May...It's the one ski that everyone wants to ski on when I bring it along on group trips... It's on my top five must-have list every year... hell, it's simply MY FAVORITE SKI EVER. Yes, yes... there are skis I like better on ice, skis I like better in Powder and skis I think are more visceral... But all have some type of drawback somewhere... This Dynastar SkiCross ski scores 80% or more in every single category. THAT, ladies and gentlemen, is a rarity.
The Dynastar Ski Cross is my favorite ski ever because it's so versatile, so fun, so easy, so perfect in most every situation, it even kicks ass in bumps and in powder, it loves steeps, it adores speed and it carves up a mountain like the sharpest blade on your leatherman and yet... you could even, as a pure beginer, learn to ski on this ski with ease... Like Uncle Tom says: UN-BELEIVABLE!
People always ask me... if you had to take but one ski (I always take 4 pairs of skis on most of my ski trips) on any given ski trip, what would it be? Catch me on a bad day and I'll just sit there, trying to pull a blank out of my hat... but ask me when my brain is functioning and I'll snap back "Dynastar Ski Cross". Because it's everything a ski should be... and it never misses a step. Derived from modern (non-FIS) GS and "Ski Cross" skis, this perennial favorite is simply put THE ONE SKI QUIVER.
So with this sword I thee knight: SKI OF THE YEAR
Enough with the reading. Do yourself a favor, Get a pair of '08 Dynastar SkiCross and go skiing... Yes, they're pricey... nothing worth having this much is ever cheap... Just do it. And please, feel free to email me your thanks to JF@Gords.com

SELECTING THE RIGHT SKI
We pride ourselves on trying EVERY ski we sell BEFORE we decide to offer them to our customers... So we're uniquely qualified to match skier to ski... Provided, of course, said skier is able to adequately describe to us his or her skiing style and terrain preference.
The reason internet ski sales are measured in thousands of units rather than in millions of units is simply because ski selection is still (thankfuly) the exclusive domain of the human experience. the $200 ski and the $900 ski share most of the same components so it's all about HOW the ski is made. Artisans still rule. Art is still a big part of ski construction... It's still about how the ski "feels". You just can't describe that unless you've slapped them on. That's what we do. We try them out, and help you understand the nuances. Help you get the right one for you.
Published ski tests are one tidbit of information that might help... provided you trust these tests not to be tainted by sponsorships, advertising dollars and personal brand preference. Ski-test-review sites are also another source of debatable information. Don't ask us to comment on these faceless, unaccountable, dubious reviews. We can only tell you about OUR experience. We trust no-one but ourselves and that's the main reason (as I've pointed out earlier) we go to considerable lengths and expense to test every single ski we think might be suitable for our customers... [read about our ski test here] We then select the pick of the litter, slap them on our wall and proudly stand behind each and every pair with our "love them or we'll swap them" guarantee when you go with our recommendation (ask one of our ski sales-people what that entails).
Unfortunately that's why we will never guarantee that ski 'X' will perform as advertised on their own website... Most ski manufacturers often mis-categorize their own product, it's a simple result of trying to hit every category... and why even their own 'product selectors' often miss the mark. Sometimes a ski that is supposed to be good at something ends up being AMAZING at something completely different... And there's nothing wrong with that. That's the beauty of our process, finding the jewels that will make your on-snow experience a phenomenal one rather than an adequate one.
That's where we come in.
The only catch is that, unfortunately, we can't help you with selecting the right ski over the phone or by email... It's a process we'll only embark upon in person. And while we stand by our lowest price policy, there is a price to pay for all this knowledge, and that price is that you call (or drop by) one of our two locations, make an appointment with one of our specialists and make the trip to Gord's. Not an unreasonable investment we think, considering the potential upsides associated with finally owning the right gear.
