THE RIGHT GEAR FOR YOU
We go through so much effort and care to select the products that we decide to present to you... (if you only knew) One day we'll take a moment and go through the process. Until then, here's how we look at selling you the gear you want.
No
matter what the price of what you end up buying is,
be it $24.95, $559.95 or $3999.95 it makes no real difference
to us, (well... Maybe it does. After all, it's gotta
be within your budget and of course you must be able to
afford the thing...) just as long as you're happy, that you enjoy yourself and that you feel like you made the right choice. THAT is what we're all about.
You see, that's the beauty of not being on commission:
Our only goal is to sell you the RIGHT bike (or tires,
helmet or Camelback, shoes, gloves... whatever it may
be). Sure, we want to sell you what you came in the
store for, but it's got to be the item you need and
want, not this weeks sales contest. What we'd really
like is for you to become a customer, to buy into our
little thing called Gord's. To become part of our extended
family, part of our Mountain Bike Club even.
We
try hard not to be more expensive than the next guy,
we actually aim to be a bit cheaper... We do our homework,
surf our competitor's websites, pay tham a visit once
in a while and back it all up with our LOWEST PRICE
POLICY. But l et's face it: If you hunt hard enough,
if you spend enough time on the web, you'll ALWAYS be
able to find any given product cheaper somewhere else.
At some point we do cry 'uncle'. We also want to be
here to serve you next month, next year... for the entire
extent of the excellent service program we offer with
all our bikes... With
the same great staff and service. Some retailers are
desperate to buy customers, they'll do anything, including
selling product at a loss, we simply can't compete with
that. What we're trying to do at Gord's is provide you
with tangible VALUE for your hard-earned cash. Giving
you a bit more for what you're paying for. Which is
why you won't find an E-Commerce site here any time
soon. No doubt about it, you get what you pay for. At
Gord's we strive to give you just that... Plus a bit
more.
THE FULL SUSPENSION HOLY GRAIL
What we look for most in a full-suspension bike is intuitiveness. When a bike simply does its job, no fuss no muss. Rare is the ride you just jump on and go. Rob and I share that appreciation for that particular underrated characteristic. Many 4" travel bikes deliver that "comfortable hardtail" feel, I'm no expert but I kinda believe that the drama free suspension experience of 4" bikes has something to do with the fact that, well... quite simply, there's less suspension travel... so it's more "buttoned down". Examples of solid, intuitive 4" designs are many including the Jamis Dakar and the timeless Rocky Mountain Element family of bikes.
Getting bikes with more than 4 inches of travel to behave in that efficient, solid, yet lively way is not that easy it seems. Very few "5 inch and up" bikes that we've tested over the years managed to deliver the feel of a 4 inch bike with one or two more inches of travel. Once you get up there it seems that many bikes get wobbly knees or either get heavy in order to counter that long-travel challenge... The less-than-perfect examples simply become "squishy"
When we find that rare combination of balance, poise, comfort and efficiency it's usually very subtle. These bikes rarely jump up and shout "HEY LOOK AT ME! I DO MY JOB INTUITIVELY!" When we find a bike that blows us away we usually quietly look at each other and go "pssst! I like this bike" and ride for a bit longer until we add "hey, I think you should try this bike out, I'd like your thoughts"... all the while smiling and simply enjoying the ride.
To say that 2007 and 2008 have been very good full-suspension test seasons would be an understatement. With 3 sweet new bikes recently inducted into Gord's Long-Travel MTB Hall-of Fame. The Jamis BAM, the Scott Genius and the very bling Commencal Meta 5.5... Joining such superlative squishy icons such as the stalwart Jamis XLT, the Ellsworth Epiphany, the Rocky Mountain SXC and the much loved Jamis XAM.
Life is pretty sweet at Gord's. How fortunate are we to have some of the very best long travel bikes that don't act like big fat spongy marshmallows. Long travel bikes that make you wonder why anyone would ride less.
Listen, if you ride any trail, flat as a sidewalk or steep as you can find... If you're over 19 years old or 40 years old and you want to keep on riding into your sixties and beyond... if you're still riding that hardtail... WAKE UP! Give your head a shake. Do yourself, your body and your ass a favor, get with the times. INJECT SOME FUN in your moribund life, get a full suspension bike and join the ranks of those who do more than just ride, join the ranks of those who are having the time of their lives on their bikes, join the ranks of the living. LIFE IS TOO SHORT TO RIDE A HARDTAIL. (We should make a T-shirt!) Click here for [more] on our full-suspension page. H
WINNIPEG'S LARGEST BIKE RETAILER
We're not quite sure how to go about this... there are a few competitors who claim to be "winnipeg's biggest" when in fact, they're not. No one in Manitoba offers a larger bike selection, more models to chose from, more floor space to browse through or a larger inventory to draw upon. If you're into bikes, if you want to see, feel, touch, smell and test-ride more bikes than is necessary, we're you're bike shop.

What, do you ask, is up with all these frame-only
jobs we're now stocking? Frame-only bikes appeal
to several types of people. [a] the person who has
been building up a bike and has very nice parts
and is now at the frame-upgrade portion of the process.
[b] the person with a higher than-average budget
who'd like a VERY unique bike with a highly personalized
component group. [c] the dude or dudette who has
pushed the limit of where their current bike will
take them and now wants to start building up a bike
little by little using their current parts of their
existing bike and finally there's the rider who
just HAS to have a particular brand of bike that
simply does not offer what they want in a complete
bike.
Like the guy said, It's all good.
For
all those special people we sell three most excellent
brands of bikes that offer several frame-only options
for all tastes: Seven Bikes, Ellsworth Bikes and
of course our good friends at Rocky Mountain.
Go ahead, do it. Brian, JF, Dave, Dean, Dennis and
Rod did. There's nothing like a custom build by
our master bike-builders.
|

We do it lots... pull something off the shelf, take
it out and give it a go. Take it through the ringer,
lend it to others, get their feedback. That's the
one thing about product selection that we cling to
no matter what: Test it, only THEN sell it. We're
not keen on letting our customer play guinea pig with
product we sell. If it's worth selling , we'll find
out first THEN we'll recommend it to you, with the
strength of knowledge behind us, knowing it won't
break, knowing the supplier will stand behind it,
knowing it will perform as advertised.
Many things we've tested never make it to our sales
floor. You might see us using something we don;t sell.
Often we're checking it out. If it's amazing and it's
reasonably priced, we'll often do what we need in
order to get our hands on it... Such was the case
with Jamis, Ellsworth, Kenda and Fox. Stuff just too
good not to sell. Our store is full of product like
that. We're very proud of the product we sell. If
there's something you want that we don't sell, PLEASE
let us know. If there's a reason we don;t carry it,
we'll let you know... If we should check it our, rest
assured: We will.

CANADA'S LARGEST JAMIS DEALER
As a retailer (at least not for us) It's not something you gun for, being the number one dealer of anything. Our loyalty lies 100% with you, our customers, we want to be YOUR number one retailer... But at some point this year we received a phone call from the great folks at RB (the Canadian Jamis distributor) whith some news to the effect that no-one in Canada sell more Jamis bikes than Gord's!
The main reason we sell so many Jamis bikes is pretty simple: They make great bikes. The other half-a-dozen other reasons include the fact that they really do care about the end-user (you), the fact that every single one of their bikes are hand-made (as opposed to the rampant robotic assembly that the big 3 engage in) and the fact that the bike represent true value, lots of bang for the buck.
Drop on by (we say that a lot) check them out, we think you'll be impressed as many, like Arlie (pictured above) with just how impressive these excellent bikes ride. For more about the superlative Jamis bikes, check-out their website HERE |

GORDS DOES COMMENCAL
Attention all bike lovers! Gord's is very proud to announce that we'll be offering Commencal Bikes starting in the summer of 2008! Commencal is a very cool, forward thinking niche bike company from Andorra. (they also hppen to sponsor the ubiquitous Cedric Gracia)... Needless to say we're very excited about this news!
Here's how this came about: Robbie and I were in Vegas, testing our allotted complement of bikes... and since day two was simply overrun with testers, bike companies were struggling to keep up with demand for test bikes. During one lull in testing (while waiting for the Jamis Dakar XAM to become available) I glanced over to the Commencal booth only to see someone about to return a "Meta 5.5" in my size... And since Commencal bikes had always piqued my interest I decided to pounce on the poor guy who was holding said bike. When I rolled up to Catherine and Rob on the Commencal both looked at me puzzled, "but that's
not on our list..." I shrugged, made up some story involving the French and off we went onto our favorite loop or Bootleg Canyon.
Once in a while a bike rides so well that you HAVE to reconsider stuff... This was one of those bikes. Not unlike Intense bikes in 2006. These Commencal bikes were NICE. So nice, in fact, that both Robbie and I felt it necessary to include it onto our respective TOP 5 BIKES lists.
The next step is the percolation, the mulling over of, the scheming, the math, the strategizing... Trying to find a way to get these sexy bikes on our floor for 2008. Gladly, with the help of the very nice and helpful Peter Appleton from Commencal Canada, we found a way... And man, are we stoked!
