SCAVENGERS
We have been doing this great event since 2005, it's a friendly competition that we put together every year in order to shake things up a bit... Get Club members to get to know each other, have a great time and get to discover Winnipeg.

Either register as a team of three (3) or register as solo (1) and we'll slot you into a team or make one up around you.

June 25 is the date for Gord's Bike Club's Scavenger Hunt. A crazy fun race throughout the city in teams of 3 in search of clues punctuated with skill competitions and lots of laughing. This year we'll have a new set of clues, some sweet skill tests and prizes galore.

Remember, you have to pre-register by June 22 either as a single or as a team of 3 (singles will be gathered into teams of 3). Come up with a name for your team and get ready to rock and roll. This will be our 5th year doing this thing and it's always more fun than it should.

Last year we finally found a way to bend the rules enough to prevent the "Gord's Girl's" from winning 4 in a row... Up until last year they have always managed to thwart our attempts at keeping them from winning... They are the uncontested heavyweight favorites to take the cup again (there's no actual cup). So look around, get 2 buddies and sign up by emailing me your team name and the 3 members on it... and prepare to take the city by storm!"

Your team of three will take off together rallye-style by punching a time card at the start and finish of the race. you'll then head off for two hours or so of scavenging, skill tests and adventure throughout the city.

We'll have 2 or 3 pit stops along the way for bike handling and fun skills. While all this is timed ... overall time is just part of your end score... Extra points are awarded for questionnaire completion, skill completion and each question has a different score value (just to keep things interesting). Remember: Communication devices such as radios or cell phones are prohibited and like all Gord's Bike Club events, a healthy sense of humor is highly recommended.

Check out the cool pictures from previous years' races: (definitely worth a look): 2005 2006 2007

Sound like fun? Well we try to organize 2 of these a summer... This year we're doing it June 25th 2008, the second is set for the end of July... Be there or be square.

Want a glimpse of what you may or may not have to contend with? Here are the questions to the June 2006 Scavenger Hunt questionnaire:

[1] Head to Lyndale Drive.

[2] How many baseball diamonds are visible from Lyndale Drive?

[3] Go to the south east end of Lyndale Drive, and follow the retaining wall.  There is a bear paw (with claws) painted on the wall, at the eastern-most end. What is the word above the claw?

[4] What institution can you see directly across the river from you?

[5] Go see Desiree in the kiddies' park next to the Norwood Community Center.  Your entire team needs to be there. You must bring her one flower for her daughter. Tell her the answer from [3].  Get your second instruction sheet and your second Playing card from Desiree.

[6] Consume your Energy Gels, you’re going to need them.

[7] How many sheaves of Wheat are featured atop the Norwood bridge?

[8] How many leather chair/couches are in the lobby of the Inn at the Forks?

[9] What's the name of the Children's Museum building @ the forks?

[10] In feet and inches, What's the posted height limit in the lower parkade at The Forks?

[11]  At the top of the parkade, count how many steps are on both metal staircases that link the top level to the next level down.

[12]  Go see Caleb at the top of the Parkade, have your picture taken with your other two team-members, get another playing card and your third instruction sheet.

[13] How many women are always at the corner of Waterfront & McDonald?

[14] Go to the black and silver lookout deck near the corner of George & Waterfront.  Who does Kayla love?

[15] Go to the northeast end (elbow) of John Hirsch Place (in the exchange district near Rorie street parallel to Bannatyne) - how many lion heads can you see?

[16] Head to The Line-Up (98 Albert Street) and ask Bryce for your coupon.

[17] Name 4 kinds of beers they sell?

[18] Go to the Winnipeg '99 Pan Am Games torch at the Forks.  Find "The Lombard" What business is engraved directly above it?

[19] Go to the location of (18) closest to Gord’s.
Find Ian for your 4th sheet and playing card

[20] Go to the concrete/stone steps (by the river) in Mc Fayden Park on  Assiniboine Avenue.  What's buried there?

[21] Go down the stairs.  Stand as close to the river as possible.  Look upstream. How many TV antennas can you see on the roof of the apartment building closest to you (across the river)?

[22] Now look downstream.  How many Canadian flags can you see?

[23] How many bears are on the lawn around the Legislature?

[24] On the south end of Kennedy Street, (by the river).  How many X's are on the metal railing?

[25] How many condemned buildings are in that cul-de-sac?

[26] On the south side of Assiniboine ave. How many parking meters are between Garry St. & Main St.?

JOIN US!

Whatever the reason we ride, we do it together, we make friends, we encourage and laugh with each other and we make every day better by doing something unique and FUN. If this sounds appealing to you, please take a moment to read more about our little club on these pages starting perhaps with our "rides" page here:

MEMBERSHIP REQUIRED
All riders must be paid members. We hold bring-a-buddy events three times a summer for those suffering from commitment phobia and wishing to try out a ride before joining. Each "buddy" must be sponsored by a member.

FEE
The membership fee for 2008 is $49 for a non-racing member, $25 if you are a Kid's of Mud kid... and it comes with a healthy list of perks and shwag... Not the least is a free massage from our good friends at Symmetry Massage Therapy symmetrymassage.com

$10 TEST RIDE
So you have commitment issues that prohibit you from jumping into anything without first dipping your toes in to test the temperature? It’s OK, we’ve finally given into your type and we’re now offering a one-time only Test Ride for a non-refundable fee of $10 (plus tax).

Available only on Wednesday Night Rides, this Test Ride must be arranged at least 30 minutes before the start of any WNR (there’s some paperwork involved). and allows you to join in on our most popular ride for one evening. We hope you’ll take advantage of this great offer and join us! Remember: “Test Rides” are only available on WNR’s.

RULES
Rides are organized by volunteers and all are governed by our Rules of engagement and our Ride Etiquette.

WHEN DO WE RIDE
We currently hold rides on Tuesdays, Wednesdays, Thursdays Saturdays and Sundays. more might be added as demand dictates. Click on the hyperlinked days above to see what we're doing ride-wise on what day or simply check out the following link for our complete ride listing on our ride page:

HOW LONG DO WE RIDE
Great question. Depends on the ride... But we rarely ride for less that 2 hours... and then again, it depends on what ride we're on... Some rides are punctuated with many breaks, some, like the road rides, just go. We're very rider-driven so it depends on who's along. Remember, we happily ride for the slowest rider.

SKILL REQUIRED
Depends on the ride. Our recommendation, if you're not sure, is to start off with our tame Tuesday Night Family Rides or one of our Thursday Night Learn-to-Ride-Better Rides... Then work up to our Wednesday Night Rides and then just follow your nose. The biggest mistake potential riders make is the perennial "I'll get started on my own and join in when I've done a few rides by myself" it unfortunately doesn't work too well that way. The 'herd' starts off at the start of the season at a very slow pace and then as the season get's rolling it naturally inches its way to a faster pace... So if you want to hop on the train, get on when we're all rusty... the last thing you want to do is hop on a Wednesday Night Ride in October... the train, while still no bullet train, is nonetheless moving along at quicker pace at that point.

PICTURES
On certain rides we take pictures. Many pictures. It provides people with memories (with your membership you have access to our entire library of pics... from 2002 until now), ride pictures provides us a tool to promote riding and a healthy lifestyle... And it keeps those rides from becoming races. We've been doing it since day one and we're not intending on changing that just yet... so deal with it and for Pete's sake, SMILE!

REQUIRED HEAD-GEAR
All rides are helmet, patience and sense-of-humor mandatory. If you are a die hard curmudgeon hammerhead who dislikes the company of others and derives satisfaction from incessant complaining and/or the practice of cutting other riders off and showing no respect for your fellow ride participant... If that's you, may we humbly suggest another club's ride instead? For while we profess that "everyone's welcome" we do unfortunately have a distaste for crotchety or impatient folk that make rides unpleasant. We're all in it for the fun of it. No one is forcing those people to ride with us. Come in with the right frame of mind and everyone has a blast. Simple.

GEAR
Right after the helmet, you'll need the following: [1] a bike that is trail-worthy (if it says "Supercycle" or "CCM" or "Infinity" or "Jeep" or "Sears" on the side of it, that's not a good sign). Your bike must have functioning brakes, tires and gears and it must pass a summary inspection showing it's in good working order. [2] you'll next need some sort of hydration (most of us use Camelbacks) and some type of food (our rides last a few hours so food and water is recommended). [3] we suggest (these are not mandatory) Bike shorts and gloves (for comfort's sake).

WE'RE GOING
RACING

We're looking to add some riders to our ranks. If you feel the need for speed, have a healthy sense of humor about it all and let's not kid ourselves, we're mostly doing this for fun of it all. Simply drop us a line at Racing@Gords.com and introduce yourself to our team manager, Ryan Loiselle. He'll let you know what's involved with joining our racing team.
YES, RIDE
ETIQUETTE

Formulated by IMBA, the International Mountain Bicycling Association. These common-sense rules are recognized around the world as the standard code of conduct for mountain bikers. If you wish to ride with Gord's Bike Club, it's the law of the ride. For the IMBA rules of the trail with our slight spin on them, please click on the link below.
GORDS DOES COMMENCAL
Attention all bike lovers! Gord's is very proud to announce that we'll be offering Commencal Bikes starting in the summer of 2008! Commencal is a very cool, forward thinking niche bike company from Andorra. (they also happen to sponsor the ubiquitous Cedric Gracia)... Needless to say we're very excited about this news!

Here's how this came about: Robbie and I were in Vegas, testing our allotted complement of bikes... and since day two was simply overrun with testers, bike companies were struggling to keep up with demand for test bikes. During one lull in testing (while waiting for the Jamis Dakar XAM to become available) I glanced over to the Commencal booth only to see someone about to return a "Meta 5.5" in my size... And since Commencal bikes had always piqued my interest I decided to pounce on the poor guy who was holding said bike. When I rolled up to Catherine and Rob on the Commencal both looked at me puzzled, "but that's not on our list..." I shrugged, made up some story involving the French and off we went onto our favorite loop or Bootleg Canyon.
