Darci, Rippin it up on her most favourite bike ever: Her Rocky Mountain Slayer 70
ROCKY MOUNTAIN SLAYER R&D
Val has one, Darci has one, Gavin has one, Shantel has one, Watson has one, Steve Shaw has one, Blaine has one, Janique has one... We simply LOVE the Rocky Mountain Slayer.
Why do we like the Slayer? Well let's start with the fact that most folks buying this level of bike aren't in their teens, or even early twenty's. We have mortgages, We like comfy bikes. We like light bikes. We don't want our bikes to brutalize us the way hardtails beat us up. We don't like bikes that mock us because we're a little more chubby than that bike courrier like 4 inch full-suspension bikes do. We like our bikes with a sense of humour. We like our bikes to have big sweet-spots. We like fast, but not at the expense of fun. We like our bikes to help us climb over stuff and up stuff and we like our bikes to not freak us out when we descend.
While we're at it,
we like bikes that are built by humans, not bikes that are built by machines who know nothing of where we ride or how we ride. We own cars, we like cars, we have friends, lots of them, we laugh when we ride, we ride in groups so we can make fun of each other and encourage each other. We'd rather ride long and fun than short and serious. We love sexy bikes. We love it when a bike can make up for our beer guts and our irrational fears. We like bikes that are made with passion rather than math. The Rocky Mountain Slayer is made for us. Thank you Rocky Mountain... for making bikes for us.
NO TAX BIKE SALE CONTINUES...
WITH A TWIST It's simple. Buy any adult bike, add-on any two accessories you want and we'll discount the bike the equivalent of the taxes. Simple enough? Call it a "No Tax Sale" if you must but it boils down to you getting a pretty good deal on whatever bike you want. This year's bike, a 2011 (or maybe a 2010) ... But certainly not a 2009 leftover that no-one wanted in the first place.
INTERBIKE! It was to be Interbike's last tango in Las Vegas (the show was supposed to move to Anaheim next year) and like every year, we were there testing gear, learning about what's new, what's hot and what's not. At the last minute Interbike decided to stick with the heat and stay in Vegas for another two years and we're super happy about that 'cause we looooove testing bikes in 110 degree heat (sort of). For us, it's not an option, we really feel it's important to actually test the bikes that we intend on selling. If the bike sucks, we don't buy it, if it does not represent good value, we won't order any... It costs us a lot of money to do so but we firmly believe that it's necessary in order to maintain legitimacy...
GORD'S SKI AND BIKE WINS AGAIN! Uptown Magazine has been doing this for several years. They call it "Best of Winnipeg" and in 2011 its readers once again chose Gord's Ski and Bike as "Winnipeg's Best Bicycle Shop" and we're tickled pink... and so very proud to accept this prestigious honor! Here's what the good people at Uptown Magazine have said about us: "Having been in business for 50 years, the people at Gord’s know how to treat you right. Whether you’re just starting to ride, you broke your bike “just riding along” or you’re looking to get the most serious of serious bikes, Gord’s helpful, knowledgeable staff is the best of the best"... Wow! We couldn't have said it better ourselves. Simply smashing! Allow us to take a moment to thank all the folks who took the time to vote for Gord's Ski and Bike as Winnipeg's Best Bike Shop! THE LOVE OF A GOOD BIKE Life is way too short to ride poo. If you've fallen out of love with your bicycle, come and see us, we specialize in rekindling two wheel love. Whether it be a cruiser bike, a comfort bike, a road bike or a full-suspension bike, we've got it for you... and PLEASE, no need to apologize of feel intimidated because you're just looking for a $450 bike... We pay the rent on $450 bikes! We treat all our customers equaly... (and did we mention we're NOT on commission?) no need to worry, whether you're buying a $299 bike or a $3999 bike, we get excited the same. Drop on by either of our two big stores, take the time to introduce yourself to any of our friendly staff (like Darci or Kaitlyn) and feel the difference.
RIDE MUCH? No kidding, we were doing a little ride-video inventory today on YouTube and realized that -wow- we've hosted over 50 rides this year so far! ...and that out of the 320+ videos we now have on YouTube, we have over 52 videos (yes, that's 52 rides so far) from this summer to prove that yes, we do indeed ride it like we talk it. For more Gord's Bike Club info just point your mouse HERE. For all our ride videos
EAGLE HEAD LAKE No, there is no such lake on any map... It's a name that we gave to an unnamed lake near the trailhead of a special project of Gord's Bike Club. You see, it's one thing to sell bikes (and damned good bikes at that) but altogether another thing to make sure our customers have somewhere to ride said bikes.
That's why we're so very much involved with IMBA and why we spend so much time and money building and maintaining trails. Eagle Head Lake is our baby, our pride and joy... probably because we created it from scratch. We've been working on it for the better part of a year now and it's simply awesome! Yes, it's quite a bit technical and yes, it's 2 hours outside of the city but man, is it
worth it. Open to everyone, it's probably best savored on one of Gord's Bike Club's infamous Epic Rides...
GORD'S LOWEST PRICE POLICY At Gord's we don't believe in charging more than the next guy for anything we sell. So we though up of this pretty cool idea in order to make your shopping experience hassle and worry free. We've kicked off the season with our most aggressive pricing policy yet: If you find any same product for less (in the city), please
just let us know, we'll not only match it, we'll also beat it by another 5%. How's that for putting our money where out mouth is?
SPREADING THE WORD Bikes are the future! From mountain bikes to road bikes, to commuter bikes, to kids bikes to triathlon bikes and even downhill mountain bikes! We have many different flavors of bikes for every pallet and taste. This year is the time to get out there and enjoy the outdoors without breaking the bank. Bikes are relatively inexpensive, relatively maintenance free (check out our killer service plan here) and lots of fun
(check out our fun bike club)
WHAT DO YOU GET? It's always nice to get a little something for nothing and when you buy your bike at Gord's you get just that. It all starts with the way we build our bikes. We take great pride in taking our time to do it right. So much so that all our bikes are signed by the techs that built them. We
follow that up with our unique way of looking at buying a bike: First off, we're NOT on commission ... That allows us to put the correct emphasis on style, comfort, performance and super important stuff like fun! We then follow it up with bike tune clinics and a few deals here and there on the coolest of accessories... But the kicker is Gord's exclusive New Bike Service Plan... Where we promise to care for your bike for not one
but SIX years! It's a promise we take very seriously. For more details click the following link:

CALL IT A LIFESTYLE CHANGE Dread the gym? Hate to diet? Welcome to the club. More than a few of our customers have taken a moment to share with us the many reasons for taking-up biking... As a simple, fun and liberating way to live a better life. Like John F. Kennedy once said "Nothing compares to the simple pleasure of a bike ride".
As one customer so aptly put it as she purchased a wicked-cool Scott Contessa 40 mountain bike, a sweet Bell helmet and some matching Sombrio gloves "I've decided to make this a lifestyle change, I'm going to drag my family out so we can live a better, healthier life". That made us think... Maybe Kelly is on to something here, maybe we should all try a bit harder.
If you need some help in making that change, that shift towards a better life, don,t despair. We're here for you. From our friendly staff who can help you not only get geared-up but also help you with advice and education to Gord's renowned
Bike Club where we'll provide you with motivation, riding buddies, peer pressure and more than a few amazing rides to get you started... We're here to help.
PERSONAL GEAR CONSULTANT Gord's "Personal Gear Consult" is something we thought up after our first of many busy weekends here at Gord's. We were wondering how to give those who take buying something like a bike seriously ... What to do for those of you requiring a bit more attention. Sure we do all we can (and then some) for those of you just walking into any of our stores... But sometimes it's frustrating for us, we get so busy, somewhat a victim of our success... and like it or not we sometimes miss details. So here we were, wondering how we could do things better, how we could give you 150% of the Gord's experience. So we thought of this.
GET A HELMET AND WEAR IT RIGHT!
JOIN THE CLUB! Have you ever thought "if only I had friends who liked riding as much as I do"? Well here at Gord's we don't just supply you with the sweetest gear known to man, we're also in the business of providing your with a few reasons to ride. It's called Gord's Bike Club and let us tell you about it:
"We ride together, support each other, we enjoy the experience together and appreciate each other's company. That's what we're about. A big family of 2 wheel aficionados who rely on each other for support, motivation, challenge and friendship. No racing, no elitism, just regular folks with bikes they love... Wanting to ride. You too can join in on the fun! You'll quickly find that we're a very much inclusive bunch. Just sign up for Gord's MTB Club,

Gord's Bike Club is a non-elitist gathering of like-minded folk who share a gregarious need to get out and ride their bikes with a smile on their faces, a need to escape reality (even if it is just for a Wednesday evening), a need to be outside and laugh, a need to be active, a need to push the boundaries of their back yard, a need to be able to laugh at ones' self, a need to get
less fat and make new friends.
Gord's Bike Club is a not-for-profit entity that has been around since well before Gord's Ski and Bike. As our founder Gord Reid, would lead rides, organize races and help out fellow riders since the 1940's with his patented zest for the sport. Our primary goal and directive has always been to uphold that lofty tradition, to bring new people to the sport, to help those who want to ride more, to
provide a positive, FUN and challenging atmosphere for those of us who want to experience the awe of riding somewhere beautiful with friends and family in a constructive, supportive, fun and healthy way. Come on, get off your but. Give it a try!

FRS NOW AVAILABLE AT GORD'S! Are you looking for something to make a difference in your energy output? We took notice of FRS after seeing Lance pitch the stuff in various magazines. "If Lance beleives in this stuff, maybe we should take a look at FRS" we thought. Lance scrutinized the science behind this energy drink and deemed it worthy of consumption. The buzz behind this product is considerable and there's good reason for it. Darci made us try it at Interbike in Vegas last year and we were hooked. FRS is the real deal. It's simple: Beat Fatigue with FRS Energy!
Review after review, FRS garners raves and seems to gather converts at every turn. But don't take our word for it, TRY IT YOURSELF! (read lower for a special intro offer). FRS is Available in many different formats (canned drink, chews and concentrate) so there's more than one way to get all the benefits of FRS. If you're looking for something to drink every day to improve your health and provide all-day energy, start your day with a glass of FRS orange concentrate. It gives you a subtle but long-lasting energy boost and it tastes like orange juice. That’s what many of us will be doing each day. Want to avoid mixing anything? Get FRS straight out of the cans – the FRS cans offer good taste without the hassle, and they are available in a wider array of flavors. Want to skip the juice altogether? Try the FRS energy chews, which are like little pieces of ‘energy candy’ that work great to fuel your bike rides, runs, and other workouts.
If you're curious to try FRS out we're having a special intro sale on the stuff for the month of August, simply mention to us that you read about FRS on our website and we'll give you 30% off any FRS purchase! (but just for the month of August).
Oh Chaz, you make such good bikes.
HOT SEXY NEW Cove Bikes are headed our way! Here's the STD (yes, Cove bikes are renowned for having "interesting" names for their bikes) and contrary to what you're thinking, the above bike is not just a fat pig destined for boat-anchor duty upon retirement, it's a nimble speed machine that's all about Skinnies, Trannies and Drops-or as the Brits call it, "Standard" i.e. the standard by which all freeride bikes should be measured. Based on our deep plush Shocker platform, the STD is a 7.5-inch freeride version of our super successful DH bike, recognized by Mountain Biking Magazine as "DH Bike of the Year". The STD features an un-interupted seat tube and a super stiff 1.5 head tube designed to let you shove it and raise it, slaying the downs and beating the hell out of the ups. This is the perfect Shore bike, because like Chaz says, "you gotta have the strength to giver on the climb and hang on for the descents." Check back for more on our most recent addition to the Gord's Ski and Bike Family!
FIRST RIDE OF 2011
WHAT DO YOU GET Nothing sucks more than buying a bike and being left all alone, trying to figure out what to do next from a maintenance point of view.
At Gord's Ski and Bike
we're not like that. When we sell you a bike we not only appreciate your business and thank you for it, we also like to think that it's the beginning of a mutually beneficial relationship.
So when we say "don't worry about it" we're saying it like it's a good thing. Like we're going to be there for you long after our initial sale is concluded... and not just because we'd like to sell you more cool stuff, it's all part of the deal: We want to see you out there enjoying your new bike for a long, long time. When you buy a new (non-clearance priced) bike From Gord's Ski and Bike, here's what you get:
GO AHEAD, JUST ASK We're pretty sure we've said this before: Nothing is more expensive than the wrong gear. And the right gear is not always the most expensive gear... That's where we come in. Most of us have been there, done that... and if we haven't been there and done that we'll find someone in the building that has been there done that... and we'll get that someone to help you.
Not only are we all-out committed to providing you with the bestest gear at the bestest prices but we're also here for you with expert advice on everything from where to ski to how to layer. Go ahead, don't hesitate. Just ask. It would be our pleasure to help you enjoy your experience to the fullest. We live for that stuff!
WE LIKEY FERNIE! Gord's Bike Club Members Heidi, Scott Watson, Matt Jackson, Watson 2.0 as well as staff members Darci, JF, Coppens and JT Austin hit Fernie on our bikes for he first time ever this past June... and WE LOVED EVERY MINUTE OF IT! Let us be the first to admit it, the hype is all true, this place is sensational. From the delicious burgers at the on-hill Kelsey's to the equally delicious trails and exceedingly friendly locals, Fernie is a most pleasant surprise. Especially considering the hype it had to live up to.
See, the thing is, we've been hearing about how awesome Fernie is for decades and while we're all for deserved hype, some other over-hyped locales have done a pretty good job over the years of failing to live up to said hype. That said, we're super happy to report that Fernie lives up to the build-up and then some. Sure, the main MTB lift could be faster and yes, "9 bears spotted today" can be of some concern but if you like your bike riding smooth, fast, challenging and sweet with a side dish of great on-hill accommodations as well as smiling housekeeping staff who are ok with dirty bikes in the hallways and mud everywhere... This is where you wanna go gravity assist mountain biking.
The downside: the lifts only run Thursday, Friday, Saturday and Sunday. Yep. That's it. You want the perfect experience? You're not into the 'W' scene? Here's our recommendation: Do two days at Fernie, four days at Panorama (in a head-to head Panorama still wins simply because of the high speed lift
and the exceptional outdoor hot pools) and one day at Kicking Horse... THAT would be, as out good friend and Gord's Bike Club member Pat Burr would eloquently put it, Kick ass!
JOIN THE CLUB! As you may or may not know we have this little Bike Club that we're excessively proud of. We call it Gord's Bike Club. A gregarious, non-elitist group of riders, Boys and girls who simply love to ride. We've been doing this for many, many years and it's something you should seriously consider if you possess a healthy sense of humor and just
happen to love to ride. And relax, no need to be a bike nut... We welcome folks of all skill level, good and less than good! Read all about Gord's Bike Club by clicking on the following link:
BIKES WE SELL In order to get the nuts and bolts out of the way so we can relax and enjoy the process of finding you a cool new bike, we first take very seriously the job of selecting the gear we put forth for your consideration. We take great care in selecting the right products, we test, we re-test, we do our homework, we research, we obsess, even... So go ahead, ask us why we do the bike brands we do... We'll tell you straight up it has little to do
with hype and all to do with commitment to quality, value, comfort, performance and above all enjoyment.
Like the guy said; Nothing but the bestest. From the sweet line-up of Rocky Mountain bikes to the hyper edgy Commençal (it's pronounced Com-en-sahl). Every new bike we sell is covered by our unique Gord's Service Plan and we don't just sell you a bike, we make sure you have every opportunity to enjoy said bike by doing a few things no-one else in the city dares do... Drop on by, check out the Gord's way of doing things. It's different. In a good way.
For all of us at Gord's it's about the love of the ride. The love of the sport. The joy of seeing someone get out there and smile. THAT is the ultimate pay off. Nothing makes us quite as happy as seeing someone get a cool bike (no matter what the price) and get outside and play.
At Gord’s Ski and Bike, we’re never sure EXACTLY when the moment is coming, but for everyone who gets on a bike from Gord’s, the moment ALWAYS arrives. It’s that moment where you realize you’re free. You’re outside, with the wind at your back and you first experience the limitless possibilities of exploring the great outdoors on your bicycle.
Make this summer the year you get on a bike and find your moment. We found ours over many, many years ago and have never looked back.
GORD'S GIRLS! Undaunted, irrepressible, full of courage and driven to enjoy themselves and to make the best of every situation. Proud to show their battle scars, bruises and sexy bikes, Allow us to salute the women who ride with us, the ones that fall down, wipe the mud from their faces and get back up with a smile, the women that inspire us to "suck it up buttercup" (as Leanne is famous for
saying) and to seize the day.
The name "Gord's Girls" applies to all the women who ride with Gord's Bike Club. It's a nickname they gave themselves and it's a moniker they wear with pride. From Leanne's Girl Ride on Tuesdays to Gord's Girls Racing led by Cat Horbatiuk and Jenn Holmes, Gord's Girls' mission is to initiate, encourage and participate and there's absolutely nothing wrong with that.
TRAIL BUILDING Nothing quite compares to the thrill of blazing new bike trails, to give back to our sport by providing fellow mountain bikers with somewhere to ride. It's part of our mission statement, part of our DNA. Read more about our trailbuilding and trail maintenance efforts on our trailbuilding page here:
PICKING THE RIGHT BIKE GEAR From selecting the right pumps to computers to bike lights to 6 inch all-mountain bikes, Gord's long journey in seeking out the best stuff all starts with our annual trip to INTERBIKE in Vegas, gotta love the place... or hate it. Vegas has been where the bike industry gets together for the last dozen years or so. Love it or hate it it's where we go to check out the cool new stuff and the not-so-cool-new stuff. We spend 2 days in the desert at Bootleg Canyon testing out bikes followed by a winter of sorting out the best from the rest and follow up with a half dozen days of Industry trade Shows in Nevada and Montreal...
WHEN IN VEGAS...
It's something we attend every September. The Annual INTERBIKE show in sunny Las Vegas. Although Vegas is curiously interesting we go there not by choice (I could think of a hundred and twenty eight or so places I'd rather go test mountain bikes than at Bootleg Canyon in the desert of Nevada)... We go there because for 5 days every year it's where the entire bike industry converges to show their wares for the upcoming season. It's where everyone who's serious about bikes goes to fill-up on bike knowledge and where we go to talk to those who have a say in what the bike industry pumps out. It's the only way to do it and we take it quite seriously.
WE LOVE MOUNTAIN BIKES! Less kind folks who visit our fair province often scoff "Mountain bikes in Winnipeg? But... you have no MOUNTAINS!" To that we regularly reply "OF COURSE MOUNTAIN BIKES! HAVE YOU SEEN OUR ROADS?"
(no but really, all kidding aside, have you seen our roads?).
Mountain bikes are super versatile and allow so much terrain diversity that they're a hard entity to ignore if you're shopping for an all-around bike. For more about our Mountain Bike selection, check out our new MTB product page HERE:
THE TED CHRONICLES Just wanted to let you know that 2 years ago my family bought my Rocky Mountain Element 10 for my 50th Birthday. At the time I was getting it I was thinking…am I crazy to spend this much money on a bike?? I have to say looking back, it has been one of the best investments ever made…It is an activity I have always loved and can enjoy even more with a great bike.
The ride is unbelievable…easy shifting, smooth rides over rough terrain, full suspension definitely nice for the longer rides etc.
Joining the bike club has improved my riding skills immensely…watching riders like yourself, Coppens and others is truly inspirational… club members are also great folks…the option to take the easy route with no stigma is a great relief…riding with younger people makes me feel younger (What is this 16 year old boy doing in this old body???)
Riding the trails is a great activity Mike and I really enjoy and gives us an activity we can do together for the rest of our lives. We do this in the mountains with my brother and his son and daughters as well…so it is truly a family activity.
Building the riding skills allowed me to really enjoy the downhill ride at Whistler last year. The better ride clinics and coaching from yourself and other riders is truly great…Being able to learn to ride down stairs comfortably last year was a great accomplishment and learning to ride up stairs last week was awesome!!
This year we will do it at Whistler again only more…without the improved skills of the bike club, would not enjoy this type of riding nearly as much.
It has been a great way to get in better shape…even used the bike in the winter this year…was ok at -35 degrees…also helps for getting into shape for skiing.
This year for my birthday my wife bought me a book called “Younger Next Year”. The gist of it is exercise 6 days a week and do new and exciting things. Biking accomplishes both of these. So in short if anyone is even thinking about getting a new bike, I would highly recommend it. Get a good bike, as much as you can afford and use it…every day if you can…
I can also say the service has been great… Last year when I got the bike, I was fitted with an 18” frame…I found that after using for a weekend my neck was really sore… So staff found a 20.5” frame which works much better for me…exchanged bikes with no hassles whatsoever…
So again thanks it has truly been great.
Regards, Ted
LOWEST
PRICE POLICY
Of course you don't want to pay more
for the same stuff! Who would? We understand that when it comes to saving a dollar some of us can go a little overboard... spend more on gas than the actual difference in price... To help you out, we have this little thing called Gord's lowest price policy...
TEST IT
THEN
SELL IT
It's a simple principle by which we live and die: "Only sell what you yourself would buy". After all, life's too short to sell crap, life's too short to buy crap. To make sure we're crapless we go through much time and effort to ensure that everything we sell is up
to our lofty standards.
GORD'S LOVES SCOTT It just made way too much sense. The emergence of Scott Bikes as a clear front-runner in the bike market as Europe's largest bike brand and simply because its bikes are so chock-full of tangible technologies ... and the fact that they simply ride like stink... Like we said, it just made sense.
Scott has been in the bike business since day one. Building fun, sexy, technically superior bikes that convey a passion for excellence in design in a way very few bike companies can match. Sure, there are those companies that eat, sleep, and drink engineering, pushing concepts on folks that no-one ever asked for to begin with (lefty, anyone?)... Scott is different. In a good way. Starting with the people who look after Scott in Canada, you get a sense these people deeply care about doing it right.
Drop in, check out theses great mountain bikes... you'll surprised by just how affordable these bikes are and just how sweet they ride.
. THE RIDE We've said it before: It's all about the ride. The ride to Seven Eleven, the ride to your buddies house, the ride we call Ingolf, the ride at Panorama, Fernie, The Seine River, the ride through the monkey trails at Assiniboine Park, the ride with your 30 favorite buddies or the ride with your daughter.
Yes the bike is important. But more important than the bike is the smile on your face much like the smile on everyone's face at the last Gord's Bike Club Wednesday Night Ride. What a tremendous ride that was, what a tremendous group of people we have on our rides. If you haven't been on one yet... Now's the time.
